All good things must come to an end

It's too bad that your knees are killing you... have you seen a doctor about it? I have problems with my knees as well, and my doctor recommended some stretching exercises to help the problem.
Three weeks sans alcohol or cigarettes now! Awwh yeah!

I have no tips for looking after your knees. I wish I had. Mine are shattered.

Doing a half marathon is still a reality. You don't have to run alllllllll the way. Go for it!

no... sorry... three weeks running, but a month of no alcohol during the week (weekends still though) and nearly 4 months of no cigarettes - woohoo!!

I don't know about the 1/2 marathon... I'm doing a week of low impact exercise and then seeing how I go with a bit of a run...
Really? I might give the Doctor's a try if I still haven't had any improvement after a week. I also thought a sports physio might be able to help - have you ever tried that? What did your Dr put your knee problem down to?
Sports physio's can be expensive although they sorted my brother's ankle out no problem. I wish I'd got my knee seen to at the time rather than let it deteriorate... Definitely worth a consultation with a physio!

I haven't tried a sports physio, but my knee problem had a lot to do with the fact that I wasn't fit. My kneecap was being pulled wrong (you have four muscles in your thigh that control your kneecap) because the strength of my muscles were unbalanced. So I needed to balance them out and even out my muscles basically. My doctor recommended some stretches to do so.. and that helped. I haven't had any major kneecap grinding in a few years. I still ache here and there, but that appears to be normal.

But I also haven't been running/jogging either. He and I had a long chat about whether or not running was good for me... and it wasn't. It was a little too high impact for my knees period. I've switched to different exercises like aerobics & yoga now.

Have you considered cycling? You can get the same buzz from that I find and it's easier on the joints. And it makes you strong - man, my thighs are strong. I could crack a mans neck with them. lol, If he happened to be in the area.
I'm sorry about your knees. Maybe you shouldn't give up on running yet until you try taking a good day or two to rest between runs. It sounds to me like you're overdoing it. Your body will be more prone to injury if it doesn't get a chance to heal. Good luck!
yep, am definitely giving them a rest this week, only low impact exercise, then will try and do a small run next week, and perhaps build up. Hopefully I'll be right, I was really loving the running!
ha ha ha. I'm sure you could. Will see how the running goes next week and if not, maybe take up the cycling. Have done a few spin classes before and LOVED them...
[this is good]

Knees injuries can be a problem with running....so...let me introduce you to another very addictive passtime. Spinning. No knee injuries, good for your whole system and in fact it fixes your knees because there are no impacts. Start out easy though or you might tear some ligaments if you "attack" it right away.

I used spinning to prevent my knees from getting screwed up by karate. I'm the onlyguy I know who after more than a decade of karate didn't need any knee surgery or have any serious knee problems. Spinning is cool.

I seem to be the opposite of everyone else on this lol. I can't do spinning or cycling or cross trainers because all my knee damage is to the ligaments up the back of my leg. So the impact of a light run doesn't affect it that much.
